OUR SPACE MN

about

OURSTORY

The Twin Cities has a long history of spaces, physical and virtual, for queer and trans folks to gather and be in community. There have been long been conversations about a community center type spaces beyond what has existed at District 202 and, more recently, at 3405 Chicago . While the history and movement around those conversations has been varied and lived with many people and agencies, we are hoping to create a new conversation and a new to build community and community spaces that centers community voice, needs, and those most impacted by inequities and oppressions.

WHY US?

With the closing of the Exchange, the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition’s Space Sharing program (a wonderful community space in South Minneapolis), and Cafe SouthSide... there has been a lot of wondering and energy about “What’s next?!” With all of the harmful messages in the media and from our political leaders that actively exclude LGBTQ folks and hinder our existence and ability to thrive, we need and deserve place to call home and to call our own. Minneapolis and St. Paul are thriving places for queer and trans folks to live, and our communities deserve a “Our Space,” to be reflective of our community’s voices and needs. In 2018 we conducted four community conversations centered around the question “What would a thriving queer and trans community center look like?” Over 200 community members told us that they want to see a focus on:

WHY US?

Rox and Shor have been curating this process together while working hand-in-hand with community members, organizational leaders, and whoever wants to be in this journey to co-create our space. Rox and Shor have been working together and growing together as friends and colleagues for over 10 years. they found each other while working on the Out in the Backyard initiative, where they were tasked to conceptualize healthy and well LGBTQ spaces! Together they have been dreaming of this for a very long time.

ABOUT SHOR

I identify as a queer, trans, gender fluid and flexible, Jewish person. I benefit from white privilege and live on Dakota and Anishinaabe occupied land in Minneapolis where I strive in my personal and professional life to create more equitable and accessible spaces and opportunities for folks most impacted by inequities to thrive in meaningful ways. I love the woods, the water, growing food, playing with my kiddo and partner, and exploring the world around me.

We are wishing so much good luck and success to Shor! In August of 2021 Shor announced they “became a Certified Professional Coach AND launched a business that is 100% me, Coach Shor”.

This means Shor will be stepping back from Our Space to spend time focusing on their new business. While we will miss the amazing work and brain power of Shor on the front line of Our Space we know this new pursuit will be a valuable asset to our community and is a much needed resource.

We are so excited for Shor! And for the launch of their website for Shor Salkas Coaching & Consulting! This website showcases who they are, and how they approach this work of coaching and healing. You can find Shor at www.coachshor.com
